Most of the on-screen Avengers decided to celebrate the end of the current phase of the MCU with matching tattoos, but one Avengers opted out. While Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner all got Avengers tattoos, Mark Ruffalo did not. Now, the Hulk actor reveals that he the reason he didn’t was that he wanted to be a non-conformist. And also needles are scary, man. According to Ruffalo…
Traditionally, getting a tattoo is the thing that you do when you want to rebel against the establishment. But what do you do when everybody is getting a tattoo but you still want to rebel? Apparently, you choose not to get the tattoo as your way to stick it to the man. At least that’s Mark Ruffalo’s argument on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon when he defended his decision to not get a tattoo with his castmates.
That, and the fact that he doesn’t like needles, which is certainly something that’s going to get in the way of getting a tattoo. It sounds like maybe this was really the reason he decided to avoid getting inked, with the rest of it simply being his justification to try and sound tough.
The Avengers cast tattoos were revealed earlier this year when Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters. Apparently, the team that had been through so much together wanted to commemorate the experience of making the Avengers films and Scarlett Johansson had the idea of getting the tattoos done. the design combines aspects of all the Avengers characters into a single line graphic that resembles a letter A.
The one Avenger who is not represented in the tattoo is The Incredible Hulk because Mark Ruffalo is just too punk rock for that apparently. Check out his explanation below and see if you buy it.
I mean, Mark Ruffalo isn’t wrong. Tattoos, in general, have become much more mainstream over the years and they’re certainly not as “punk rock” as they once were. Still, they do allow you to display your own particular style or celebrate something you particularly love. I feel like Ruffalo is going to regret not joining his co-stars in this particular decision. Still, he has time to get it before Avengers 4 comes out. He could always change his mind and go back and do it, and get it placed somewhere where he doesn’t have to watch the work being done.
