Narrowing down a list of the best Oscars dresses of all time is no easy task. But a fun one? Absolutely. It’s wild to see how much red carpet trends have changed over the decades. Back in the day, A-list actresses didn’t even use personal stylists. But now red carpet fashion is a full-on industry onto itself where major designers custom-make multiple gowns with the hope that someone like Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, or Lupita Nyong’o will choose their creation to wear on one of the world’s biggest stages.
Ahead of the 2020 Oscars and after much debate, we’ve come up with a list of our favorites over the years—including Sharon Stone’s lavender Vera Wang skirt that she paired with a men’s button-down in the ’90s, Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford cape dress in 2013, and Angelina’s famous leg slit in 2012. We’ve even got old-school classics from Grace Kelly (America’s first actress turned princess), Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn.
Who will we add to this list after the 2020 Oscars? You’ll have to tune in on Sunday, February 9 to find out.
