Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato‘s friendship goes way back to their days as Disney stars, and it’s been through several ebbs and flows.
The old pals talked about the evolution of their friendship on Instagram Live as part of Cyrus’s new show, Bright Minded: Live With Miley—and they didn’t shy away from the experiences they’ve both been through in the often-brutal entertainment industry. Take Cyrus, who revealed she struggled with body image after her performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
“I basically went through two or three years where I wouldn’t wear shorts. I stopped wearing skirts on stage, all this s–t because after the VMAs and I had on my cute little nude bodysuit, everyone started comparing me to a turkey and putting a turkey in my outfit,” she said. “I was just so skinny and so pasty and they kept putting me next to this turkey, and I was feeling so bad on myself that I did not wear a bikini for, like, two years and no one thought that that would ever make me feel some type of way.”
“I think what was so hard about it was my brand has always been about being so unapologetically myself and being confident, and the worse thing that I would feel like I would be to my fans is lying or a fraud,” she continued.
Lovato told Cyrus she wished she had known what was going on. “First of all, I’m so sad that you went through that, and I had no idea,” she said. “I wish I could’ve been there, but I didn’t know and I feel like we’ve gone through times where we’re closer and then distant—and that’s fine, that’s what friends do. I just wish I could’ve been there for you. But if that ever f–ing happens again, you better call me.”
This led to a discussion about the on-and-off nature of their relationship and a reflection on how tough times can bring people who were estranged back together again. “It’s times like this that it’s a great chance to call and connect with people you may have fallen out of touch or lost contact with through some petty drama,” Cyrus said.
The “Can’t Be Tamed” singer then told Lovato, “Life is moving so fast that it’s usually hard to slow ourselves down and appreciate people in our lives, and you’ve been that person for me for so many years and we’ve been friends for so long. We can not talk forever and then some bullshit will go down, and I’ll just know you’re the person I want to reach out to. In dark times, it’s really important to reach towards those who are illuminated. I just think that you’re such a light—even if it took this crisis to get us connected again.”
To this, Lovato replied, “I feel like you’ve always been such a light and that’s why we connected at 14. We connected then because we just saw something in each other. Maybe it was because of spirituality or maybe it was just our hearts.”
Whatever brought Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato together again, we hope they stay that way.
