Jennifer Lopez Just Made the Case For Bringing Back Chunky Highlights

Jennifer Lopez already threw it way back to the 2000s by pulling her iconic green Versace dress out of retirement, so it makes perfect sense that she just revived some early-aughts hairstyles, as well.

On Friday, celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton posted a couple of photos on Instagram to debut the new look he gave J.Lo. Well, maybe “new” isn’t quite accurate. These caramel-colored chunky highlights are giving us major, foil-filled flashbacks to the days we walked around looking like this:

Kelly Clarkson circa 2002 or my middle school yearbook photo? The world may never know. (It’s Kelly Clarkson).

Appleton first posted a shot of J.Lo’s long hair blown out in soft waves that show off the contrasts. In a second photo, he really went in for nostalgia points by giving her cool, ’90s-inspired space buns. “Jlo spice,” he called his client in the caption. “Couldn’t fit the full buns in lol.”

J.Lo completed the look with another ’90s staple: a brown lip, which is a major beauty departure for Lopez, who usually ops for a neutral shade.

The pop star/actress also shared the photos on her own Instagram account and uploaded a new shot with her hair slicked down to really showcase the highlights. She has her hair pulled back in a bun, putting emphasis on the blonde streaks. But can we also talk about those neon nails?!

Honestly, it’s hard to believe this isn’t an image from 15 years ago and we’re guessing J.Lo’s number one fan A. Rod—who has admitted he had a huge crush on her about two decades ago—is feeling this look, too.

Just a week ago, J.Lo she stopped by Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus tour and talked about her major accomplishments, including her role in Hustlers and her Super Bowl halftime show. She admitted she was a bit sad about her Oscars snub, but clearly, she’s brushed it off and moved on to new things—and new hair.
