Gabrielle Union may be a new mom, but she’s certainly no stranger to Internet criticism or speaking her mind. Since welcoming her first child, Kaavia James, with husband Dwyane Wade, she’s been sharing her joyful new mom moments openly on Instagram.
But we all know what sharing can sometimes lead to, especially when it comes to parenting: mommy shamers. On Thursday, December 6, Union posted a video of her showering baby Kaavia with kisses and captioned the post, “Kissing Game. She’s got my 🖤. 💋💋💋 @kaaviajames” Soon after, the critics came out to shame Union for kissing her daughter on the lips.
“Ahhhh didn’t anyone tell you you shouldn’t kiss a baby in the mouth. Even your own. She’s beautiful though,” one user wrote in the comments. Another said, “She’s gorgeous, but no kissing babies on the mouth.” (The concern stems from germs being passed to a newborn who is still building up an immune system.) Another commenter called out something she claimed to notice about Kaavia’s breathing, writing, “She is breathing very very hard. The pull is showing. Signs we are taught by doctor to look for asthmatic children. Please take a look at this @gabunion. Adorable just be safe.”
Union, who has been incredibly open about her struggles with infertility on the road to eventual motherhood, took to the comments herself to shut down the critics. “Hey guys I appreciate all the concern about kisses on the mouth and labored breathing, I am blessed enough to have a nurse here with us while at work,” she explained. “Kaav is healthy and I don’t even touch her without washing and sanitizing myself and everything and everyone that comes into contact with her. No visits with sick folk and even all of Oprah’s crew got whooping cough vaccinations and current on all vaccinations to be in our home.” (Union and Wade filmed a television special with Oprah after Kaavia James birth. Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby airs Saturday, December 8 at 8 PM ET.)
“If you think I waited this long and went thru all this to put my baby in harm’s way… you got another thing coming,” she concluded.
Enough said, right there. But Union also got some backup from her famous friends and fans alike. “This is the best video ever and baby smooches are my favorite to do with my 3,” wrote Jessica Alba. “Especially before they start pushing you away or try to hid because it’s ’embarrassing’ – hi Honor. Get in all the smooches and ignore the haters.”
“Yessss! So Beautiful,” Vanessa Lachey added. “She is LOVED and will always know/feel it! Love you Mama!”
