Celebs Love This Ribbed White Tank Top—And It’s on Major Sale Right Now

Everyone has a sartorial white whale. For my mom, it was Carrie Bradshaw’s Fendi baguette bag; for me, it was a ribbed tank top. I first saw the humble wardrobe staple on Elsa Hosk, who gave a masterclass in the classic jeans-and-white-tee combo while casually walking around Soho last year.

It was easy enough to ID the model’s J Brand jeans—but the star of the show was easily the perfect white ribbed tank she tucked into them. The top was very clearly not “borrowed from the boys”—and lightyears away from the yellow pit-stained one your ex-boyfriend wore underneath all his black T-shirts (*shudders* just mine?). It was cut high on the neck, had wide armholes, and fit close to the body for an all-around ’90s vibe.

But where to find it? I searched all the usual spots: Re/Done, Free People, Vince, Fruit of the Loom. No dice. The model isn’t as street-style-loved as other celebs, so her look didn’t show up on any celebrity style sleuth blogs, and my colleagues also had zero luck pinning down the piece. Over the next few months, I took the laissez-faire approach of “if it’s meant to be, it’ll find me” and finally forgot about it—until it popped up on my Instagram feed this summer. This time I saw it on Sincerely Jules, and she tagged the brand: Bandier

To say I was shook would be an understatement. A retailer—that I regularly shop at—had my golden egg the whole time?! It actually made total sense. Bandier is known for carrying some of the best activewear on the market, and Wesley, its in-house brand, is just as well-made but often flies under the radar. I immediately went to snatch the top up, but I wasn’t alone. The Rivington tank top was sold out—in every single color—and had a 5,000-person waitlist. I joined it, waited for it to drop in my email a few weeks later, and snagged a white and a black before it sold out again. Yep, if Bella Hadid’s reportedly wearing it is any indication, you have to move quickly; Bandier says the Rivington Ribbed Tank sells once every 10 minutes, and that it’s been restocked 25 times since it first launched.

I get it—it’s virtually perfect. Because it’s made by an activewear brand, it fits your body like a glove, with a slight amount of compression so you really can wear it sans bra and still feel supported. (P.S.: I wear these pasties with mine.) It’s also breathable and—dare I say it?—moisture-wicking. The neckline and wide armholes have helped me reconcile the volatile relationship between my self-esteem and my arms—but what’s better is, like a true wardrobe staple, it goes with everything. Yes, right now, “everything” means high-waist jeans or sweatpants, but come fall, it can easily layer under oversized denim jackets and blazers. Plus, the Rivington Tank comes in a myriad of colors and lengths—from a black tie-dye to a ribbed dress and sports bra, which you can shop below.

I’m a perennial shopper, but like most people these days, I’m being more careful than ever about how I spend my money. I took a risk buying two of these tank tops at once, but I don’t regret a dime. They’ve already gotten so much use in my closet, and I don’t expect to ever stop wearing basics—no matter the season, year, or state of the world. Besides, when do you ever catch your white whale? Fate is fate, people. Even when it comes to style.
