Uncle Frank is the new Amazon Original Movie written and directed by Alan Ball. It stars Paul Bettany as the title character, Sophia Lillis as his niece Beth, and Peter Macdissi as his long-time boyfriend Wally. Uncle Frank is about a man who makes a comfortable life in New York but travels back home for his father’s funeral to a family he’s been avoiding. The Uncle Frank ending took an unexpected happy turn.
The Uncle Frank ending was hopeful and optimistic in a way the movie hadn’t been before. After the first viewing of the film, I questioned if the happy ending made sense in the context of Frank’s familial traumas, and I think it does. Let me explain why and discuss other elements of Uncle Frank.
Warning: This post contains Uncle Frank spoilers. Don’t read ahead if you haven’t seen the movie.
Aubrey Plaza is definitely one of the most unique personalities in Hollywood and has already proven that she can be an entertaining host. Earlier this year, she hosted the Independent Spirit Awards, where her signature sarcasm and dry wit were on full display. All in all, she has the chops for the gig and could carve out a place for herself in Oscars history alongside people like Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin and Billy Crystal.
With no plot details available, it’s unclear at present to say how this new version of Van Helsing will be different from previous adaptations, but it will have to make a pretty big effort considering how many times we’ve seen the character on the big screen. The Hugh Jackman blockbuster was the first time that a film put the character front and center, but the role has been played by a number of legends, including Peter Cushing (1958’s Dracula), Laurence Olivier (1979’s Dracula), Anthony Hopkins (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), and Christopher Plummer (Dracula 2000). It’s also worth noting that Dracula’s greatest foe has also had a pretty heavy small screen presence in recent years, particularly thanks to the Syfy series that launched in 2016.
Quite possibly a more contentious issue than the fact that HBO Max found itself without Amazon or Roku device support upon opening, Wonder Woman 1984 seems to be signaling that yet another big bone the consumer has picked with the relatively young streaming service will soon be addressed. Per WarnerMedia’s statement, Wonder Woman 1984 will be available, “in 4K Ultra HD, HDR 10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos,” when it makes its big debut on the HBO Max platform. And that’s not the end of the good news that stems from this historic occasion.
And then, on Christmas Day, we’ll see the premiere of Pixar’s newest feature film, Soul. The movie was supposed to open in theaters this year but the theater closure killed that idea. Rather than continue to delay the film, Disney has decided to release it on Disney+, without any additional Premiere Access price tag. Also debuting that day with be Burrow, a Pixar short which was supposed to screen prior to Soul in theaters.
The Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Special being a filmed drag show is also appropriately heightened, even from Judy Garland Christmas Special standards. Shade is thrown, copious amounts of drinks are had, and there’s a naked man thrown in for good measure. There’s also some hilarious puppet work involved, which feels akin to Pee Wee’s Playhouse. Later in our same conversation about influences, she did name drop Pee Wee, saying:
Although Tyrese Gibson debuted as Roman Pearce in 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious, it wasn’t until Fast Five where he became he became a mainstay of Dominic Toretto’s crew. This was the same movie that brought Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs into the fold, and when he initially was at odds with the team, he’s now become one of their key allies. However, because Johnson was busy shooting Hobbs & Shaw, he was unable to participate in the upcoming F9 (unless he shot some kind of secret cameo).
The critics haven’t always been super kind to Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker or Fifty Shades Freed. However, in general I’d say this has more to do with the plot of the films than the acting from Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, who have both gone on to more critically acclaimed things. Regardless, in a recent interview, Jamie Dornan revealed one particularly brutal review was all about his performance, though he says he doesn’t “entirely disagree.”
The good news there, to be blunt, is that, while Hulk Hogan may be one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, his greatest skills were on the microphone. He was never the most skilled ring technician, which means Hemsworth won’t need to learn anything particularly complex or high flying. That was never Hogan’s in-ring style.
While the cast of Scream weren’t all given the movie’s final script, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett assembled a killer group of familiar faces to make the slasher into a reality. Joining the trio of returning stars is another familiar face: Scream 4‘s Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks. As for the myriad newcomers, the group includes The Boys‘ Jack Quaid, 13 Reasons Why star Dylan Minnette, Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers), Jenna Ortega (You), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood‘s Mikey Madison.
