29 Ridiculously Cool Holiday Makeup Ideas to Copy

There are plenty of reasons to love the holidays, but for us, Christmas makeup tops the list (OK, fine, it’s right behind opening gifts). Between holiday parties, family time, and the magical spirit in the air, it’s a great excuse to go all out with the jewel tones and glitter. And while the holidays may not be as jam-packed with events this year (at least IRL, per the CDC’s recommendation), it’s still a great excuse to dust off those makeup brushes and finally crack open that shadow palette you optimistically bought in June.

We rounded up all the makeup ideas we’ve been saving since January and have you covered for every Zoom party and socially distant family gathering, or just to get you in the spirit. While obviously the focus this year is all about eyes (wear a mask!), we still have options for every scenario, from classic cherry lips to out-there neon. Scroll on for the best holiday and Christmas makeup ideas you’ll want to copy this season.

Elliot Page, Formerly Known as Ellen Page, Comes Out as Trans

Actor Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, has come out as transgender, revealing the name change and that his pronouns are he/they. Page outlined all of this in an Instagram post published December 1.

“Hi friends,” he wrote. “I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.”

Page continued, “I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity, and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”

Page is asking for “patience” from his fans at this time and listed staggering statistics about violence and murder against trans people. “My joy is real, but it is also fragile,” he said. “The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes,’ and of the violence. To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture. The statistics are staggering. The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences. In 2020 alone it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women.”

“I love that I am trans,” Page wrote at the end of his statement. “And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows, and the more I thrive.”

Derek Jarman’s Garden by Derek Jarman

Recommended by: Jenna Wortham, co-editor of Black Futures

“Derek’s diaries offer a glimpse into ceremony made of life, despite the looming specter of death. Jarman bought a cottage off the coast of Kent, England in the late 1980s, shortly after learning he was HIV positive. He spent his final years nurturing a magical garden filled with sea kale, sculptures crafted from sea refuse, stones arranged in circles, herbs, and wildflowers, all within clear and comical view of a nuclear power station. The entire project became a meditation on prioritizing care in the face of state-sanctioned neglect, finding beauty in desolation, and turning ruin into creation. It’s winter now, so I’m not able to garden as much as I’d like, but reading about practice as purpose, the value of finding art in everything around us is helping me keep eyes primed on the horizon and what’s next, rather than what now. “

Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan

Recommended by: Ellie Eaton, author of The Divines

“I can’t get enough of Dolan’s whip-smart debut, which has prose so electric it practically crackles.  Following the romantic pursuits of Ava, a 22-year-old Dubliner adrift in Hong Kong, and Dolan’s wry narrator finds herself caught in an unexpected love triangle with steely British banker, Julian, and the poised and beguiling Edith. As Ava discovers what it means to love and lust in the age of Instagram, the novel is both thigh-slappingly funny yet interlaced with moments of poignant vulnerability and tenderness. Far more than just a millennial romance, Dolan uses the backdrop of Hong Kong, with its metallic high-rise and marble-floored malls, to play with themes of colonialism, money, gender, and class.”

This Close to Okay by Leesa Cross-Smith

Recommended by: Maisy Card, author of These Ghosts Are Family

“Right now, I’m loving the novel This Close to Okay. It begins with a therapist driving past a suicidal man standing on the edge of a bridge. She talks him down, they have coffee, and she ends up bringing him to her home. Of course, at that point my mind went to all of the terrifying outcomes that could have come about after that decision, but what follows is one of the most charming and uplifting stories I’ve read recently. It’s the perfect dose of escapism to close out this year.”

God’s Shadow by Alan Mikhail

Recommended by: Sandi Tan, author of Lurkers

If you want a ticket out of 2020, may I recommend this biography of bloodthirsty Ottoman Sultan Selim I (1470-1520). It not only argues that Columbus’s voyage to America happened because Europeans were busy avoiding the Turks, it’ll also tell you that the Turks had a thing for moles (in 1470, a Sufi mystic predicted that the next sultan would have seven moles, and indeed Selim was born with seven). There’s also fratricide (a rite-of-passage for sultans-to-be), insane concubine politics, circumcision festivals, and it sent me down a rabbit hole reading up on Sultans. How’s this for a jetpack out of the present: Look up Ibrahim the Mad (1615-1648) who was raised in a gilded cage, loved plus-size ladies, and drowned 280 women from his harem when he was paranoid that another man had ‘tampered with’ them.”

The Searcher by Tana French

Recommended by: Cecily von Ziegesar, author of Cobble Hill

“Last Friday night I came in from walking the dog, took a hot shower, put on my pajamas, made myself a  mug of cinnamon apple tea, and told my husband and teenage son to get their own dinners. Then I got under the covers with Tana French’s new book. I read 100 pages without stopping. I rarely read mysteries but something about the moody cover and the book’s description—it’s about an American ex-cop who moves to a remote Irish village and becomes embroiled in a missing person case—suggests the perfect cold-weather escape. It is. French’s writing style is so unhurried and pleasurable. She takes her time, unfurling the mystery slowly. And every page smells and sounds like Ireland. At a time when travel is impossible and we’re spending more time at home, staying safe, it’s thrilling to be transported to another place entirely, gripped by suspense and a sense of danger as I turn the pages in my cozy lair.”

Run the World on Starz Is Sex and the City Meets Living Single—And the First Trailer Is Here

Run the World is about to become your new favorite TV show if its first-look trailer is any indication.

The eight-episode, half-hour original series is coming to Starz in 2021, though we sadly don’t have a premiere date quite yet. In a press release for the series, it’s described as “the story of a group of Black women: vibrant, fiercely loyal best friends. At its core, it’s an unapologetically female show about enviable friendship and not only surviving but thriving together.”

Yes, yes, yes. Run the World is exactly the kind of content we are looking for right now. In the trailer, we see Amber Stevens West (who we’ve loved since Greek) as Whitney Green, Andrea Bordeaux as Ella McFair, Bresha Webb as Renee Ross, and Corbin Reid as Sondi Hill, looking fabulous and living life as best friends in New York City.

In the trailer, we watch them ruminate on how partying isn’t quite the same once you’re no longer in your 20s. Plus, it sure looks like we’re going to see a lot of dating and relationship drama over the course of the season—but also plenty of female friendships and all the complexities that lie within.

The creative minds behind the show have stacked résumés—including show-runner Yvette Lee Bowser, who has worked on Living Single, black-ish, and Dear White People. Patricia Field—yes, of Sex and the City fame—is helping with costuming, so we can expect plenty of Fashion with a capital “F.”

Watch for yourself in the trailer, below, and you’ll soon be just as excited as we are.

As mentioned, Starz has not yet announced a premiere date for Run the World. But it’s currently shooting in Harlem, so that means it can’t be too far off in the new year, right? We need this TV show ASAP!

Sephora Counters Are Launching at Kohl’s in 2021

Sephora and Kohl’s are coming together in a major way in 2021.

On December 1, the beauty giant announced a longterm partnership with the affordable retailer that it’s aptly calling “Sephora at Kohl’s.” The initial 200 locations (with 850 expected by 2023) will launch in the fall of 2021 and are described in a press release as “fully-immersive, premium beauty destination, designed within a 2,500 square foot space and prominently located at the front of the store.” The beauty section on Kohls.com will also get an overhaul to feature “an expanded assortment of Sephora‘s prestige product offerings.”

Sephora

This all sounds pretty amazing, if you ask us.

“At Sephora, delivering a strong client experience through passionate employees is at the heart of who we are, and we are thrilled to find a partner who shares this identity. This is not a pop-up collaboration, but an investment our brand partners can rely on for the long-term; as a company with a history of sustained decades-long partnerships, Sephora has every confidence in the future of this collaboration and the unique experiences it will bring to consumers across the U.S.,”  Jean-André Rougeot, President & CEO of Sephora Americas, said in a press release. “Our partnership will be built on expanding our complementary reach and scale in-store and online, creating customer-centric, prestige experiences, collaborating on new innovations, and living our shared values. We fully believe Kohl’s is the ideal partner to bring this vision to life.”

After the garbage year that has been 2020, good news and things to look forward to in 2021 are more welcome than ever. For fellow beauty junkies, more access to all the beauty brands Sephora has to offer is definitely on top of the list. Just think of how fun it will be when we can all shop in stores and use testers again in a post-vaccine world.

How 14 Busy Women Unwind in 2020

The best thing I’ve done for myself this year was to learn how to protect my peace and manage the anxiety that 2020 brought. A good night’s sleep is so essential to wellness, especially as the mom of a 4-year-old. I love to take some Be Jubie CBD oil to help make sure that my nights aren’t spent tossing and turning. If I learned anything from this year, it’s that mental health is primary and that thanks to this [THC-free, sustainable] oil, it can come in the form of 1,000 milligrams of pure zen. —Naeemah LaFond, hairstylist and Amika Global Artistic Director

I got pregnant during the lockdown in San Francisco, and the one thing that makes me unwind is my at-home yoga spot: a mat, a pair of blocks, and more recently, I acquired a yoga blanket. When I feel stressed and tense, I turn off the lights and do a 30-minute prenatal yoga session on Obe Fitness. My favorite pose is to have the blocks on my back and the [blanket] on me with a lavender pillow on my eyes—I could stay like this for hours. —Elsa Jungman, Ph.D., skin scientist and founder of skin-care line Dr. Elsa Jungman.

11 Claymation Christmas Movies That Will Remind You of Your Childhood

One of my favorite holiday traditions is curling up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and watching a bunch of those Claymation Christmas movies. You know the ones: the whimsical, slightly-creepy stop-action movies from the ‘60s, ’70s, and ‘80s where the characters are made from clay and go on a bevy of seasonal adventures. Most star characters you know—Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, etc.—but a few center on narratives you may’ve never heard, like The Story of the First Christmas Snow.

You can’t go wrong with any of these films, though, so just take your pick and transport yourself back to childhood. If you need help choosing, here are 11 classic Claymation Christmas movies that will give you all the holiday feels.

It’s been a stressful year, but at least you can count on Hollywood to come through with the holiday cheer. After all, what’s more relaxing than watching an overworked woman fall in love with a Christmas tree farmer? So decompress with All the Jingle Ladies, our guide to the best holiday movies.

1. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)

The story of Rudolph has come to life in more sophisticated ways, but never with the heart of this 1964 Claymation movie. I’ve seen it hundreds of times and it still hasn’t lost its magic. Shout-out to Hermey the Elf, a supporting character in the movie who just wants to be a dentist but the other elves make fun of him. He deserves the world.

2. The First Christmas: The Story of the First Christmas Snow (1975)

This genuinely moving film centers on a young shepherd, Lucas, who’s blinded by lightning and taken in by nuns. Lucas has never seen snow and relies on one of the nuns, Sister Theresa, to experience it. But when the snow that falls during an annual Christmas pageant works a miracle, Lucas’s life is forever changed.

3. Jack Frost (1979)

Legendary actor Robert Morse voices Jack Frost in this movie, a winter sprite who can live forever but falls in love with a human girl named Elisa. Insert complications.
