The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a fascinating place right now. We’re currently in the interim period between Phases Three and Four, with the fandom left wondering what the studio has in store for the future. Marvel Studios revealed its original plans for Phase Four during San Diego Comic-Con and the D23 Expo, and the next slate of movies will kick off when Cate Shortland’s Black Widow hits theaters in May of 2020. And according to Scarlett Johansson, the movie is packing a serious punch.
Despite being an OG Avenger who debuted back in Iron Man 2, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow hadn’t been given her own solo flick in the first three Phases of the MCU. That’ll change with Black Widow, which is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War. And according to the star herself, the movie is worthy of its slot at the theaters. As she put it:
Well, this is exciting. It looks like Black Widow’s long awaited solo flick is going to really deliver, at least according to its star. But considering how long Scarlett Johansson’s tenure in the MCU has been, she would know how well the upcoming movie is shaping up.
Scarlett Johansson’s comments to THR are sure to excite the countless fans of the MCU. ScarJo’s Black Widow has been a major player in the events of the shared universe, appearing in all the Avengers movies as well as Iron Man 2 and the last two Captain America flicks. Her solo movie has been a long time coming, and the pressure is on for Cate Shortland and company to deliver for Natasha Romanoff with Black Widow.
Black Widow will finally give the title character the focus she deserves, and will feature the Avenger on a mission without her allies and team mates. The movie will put her at odds with the villainous Taskmaster, while also introducing a slew of new characters (and Widows) for her to interact with throughout the course of the blockbuster.
Cinephiles are excited to see Black Widow left to her own devices, and see her style of combat and action expanded into its own movie. The non-powered Avenger focuses on quick attacks and stealth, and if the upcoming solo movie is going to “pack a big punch”, then we should expect Widow to deal some pain to her adversaries.
It is especially important for Cate Shortland to nail Black Widow, given the character’s fate in Avenger: Endgame. Scarlett Johansson’s Avenger perished during The Russo Brothers’ record-breaking movie, sacrificing herself during the Time Heist to acquire the Soul Stone. Her death was tragic, but fans got some consolation knowing she’d appear in a future Marvel movie.
Black Widow is set to arrive in theaters on May 1st, 2020, kicking off Phase Four in the process. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
